Khongoryn Els Sand Dunes
The Gobi's Legendary Singing Sand Dunes
Rising as high as 300 metres from the desert floor, Khongoryn Els — also known as Duut Mankhan, or “Singing Dunes” — is one of Mongolia’s most spectacular natural sights and among the largest dune systems in the country. Stretching roughly 100 to 180 kilometres along the base of the Altai Mountains within Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park, the dunes are as famous for their sound as their scale.
Activities & Experiences
Why the Dunes "Sing"
Khongoryn Els is one of only around 30 known “singing dune” systems on Earth, a rare acoustic phenomenon that occurs when a precise combination of sand grain size, silica content and humidity causes cascading sand to produce a deep, resonant hum. Visitors who climb the dunes, particularly in dry conditions, often describe feeling the vibration through their feet as much as hearing it.
A Landscape of Extremes
The dunes span 6 to 12 kilometres wide and up to 300 metres at their tallest point, backed dramatically by the granite peaks of the Altai range and fronted by the unexpectedly green oasis of the Khongoryn Gol river valley, fed by underground springs from the mountains. This contrast between golden sand, green river meadow and grey granite peaks is one of the most photographed views in the Gobi.
Climbing and Camel Culture
Reaching the highest ridgelines is a genuine physical challenge — a steep, shifting climb that rewards persistence with sweeping views and, often, the singing phenomenon itself on the descent. Local herding families offer Bactrian camel treks along the dune base, and an annual mini-Naadam festival is held here each August 15th.
