Dadal Village
The Traditionally Accepted Birthplace of Genghis Khan
Set among lakes, rivers and forest near the confluence of the Onon and Balj Rivers, Dadal soum is one of Mongolia’s most historically significant villages — long accepted as the birthplace of Temüjin, later known as Genghis Khan, in 1162. The nearby hill of Deluun Boldog and the shores of Gurvan Nuur (Three Lakes) form the emotional heart of a pilgrimage that draws Mongolians and history-minded travellers alike.

Deluun Boldog: A Contested but Cherished Birthplace
Historians continue to debate the exact location of Genghis Khan’s birth, but Deluun Boldog near Dadal has been the traditionally and culturally accepted site for generations. “Deluun” is thought to mean vast and spacious, and “Boldog” a mound or hill — a fitting name for the gently rising ground where legend says Temüjin was born clutching a clot of blood in his fist, an omen of the destiny to come.
Monuments Across the Centuries
A stone monument was raised at Deluun Boldog in 1990 to mark the 750th anniversary of The Secret History of the Mongols, while a larger 12-metre statue stands at nearby Gurvan Nuur (Three Lakes), erected in 1962 for the 800th anniversary of Genghis Khan’s birth. A short walk away, Khajuu Bulag spring is said to be the water source used by Temüjin’s family.
A Landscape of Lakes and Forest
Dadal soum sits within some of Khentii’s most scenic terrain, its lakes and pine forests giving it a distinctly different feel from the open steppe further south. The area also once held one of three great Buddhist temples consecrated to Genghis Khan, destroyed during the religious purges of the 1930s but still marked by stone monuments today.
