Jiglegiin Am Canyon

A Remote Taiga Gateway on Khuvsgul Lake's Western Shore

Roughly halfway up the wild western shore of Khuvsgul Lake, Jiglegiin Am marks the point where the lakeside trail begins to climb into the Khoridol Saridag mountains, en route to the Jiglegiin Davaa pass and, beyond it, the remote Darhad Valley. Reachable only on foot, horseback, or by boat, it is one of the most genuinely off-grid corners of an already remote region.

The Route Less Traveled

The classic overland route from the lakeside town of Khatgal to Jiglegiin Am takes roughly five days on foot or horseback, following the western shoreline through increasingly isolated taiga once the jeep road ends at Ongolog Gol. From Jiglegiin Am, the trail climbs steeply toward the 2,500-metre Jiglegiin Davaa pass, the traditional gateway into the Darhad Depression beyond.

A Waypoint With Real History

For generations, this stretch of shoreline has served as a waypoint for herders, traders and travellers moving between the lake and the Darhad Valley, and simple traveller accommodation has long existed here to support that traffic. Boat operators from Khatgal also run multi-day trips up the lake to Jiglegiin Am for those who prefer water to the trail.

Taiga Wilderness Underfoot

The terrain around Jiglegiin Am is classic Khövsgöl taiga — dense larch and pine forest giving way to open alpine slopes higher up, with genuine solitude the further you travel from Khatgal. It is a landscape best experienced slowly, whether by multi-day trek, horseback expedition, or an extended boat and hiking combination.
