Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1Ulaanbaatar Arrival
Dinner
Welcome to Mongolia! Your journey kicks off at Chinggis Khaan International Airport. Once you’ve cleared immigration and collected your bags, look for your friendly local guide and driver waiting in the arrivals hall, who will transfer you smoothly to your hotel in the heart of Ulaanbaatar. Depending on your arrival time, you may have free time to rest or explore the city. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant — your official introduction to authentic Mongolian cuisine. Overnight at your hotel. Meals: DDay 1 - Ulaanbaatar Arrival
Day 2White Stupa (Tsagaan Suvarga)
BreakfastLunchDinner
After an early breakfast, begin your journey toward the Gobi Desert and the spectacular White Stupa (Tsagaan Suvarga). This breathtaking limestone escarpment rises nearly 30 metres high and stretches for hundreds of metres, shaped by wind and water erosion over millions of years. The colourful layers of white, pink and orange resemble the ruins of an ancient city — the area was once covered by a prehistoric sea, and marine fossils can still be found scattered across the surrounding plains. Enjoy a guided walk along the cliffs, panoramic photo stops, and time to admire the vast open landscapes of the Gobi. Arrive at a nearby tourist camp in the late afternoon for dinner under the wide Mongolian sky. Meals: B, L, DDay 2 - White Stupa (Tsagaan Suvarga)
Day 3Bayanzag & Moltsog Els
BreakfastLunchDinner
This morning, continue deeper into the heart of the Gobi Desert toward Bayanzag, famously known as the Flaming Cliffs. The area became world-famous after American explorer Roy Chapman Andrews discovered the world’s first dinosaur eggs and important fossils here in the 1920s. Explore the dramatic red sandstone cliffs, which glow brilliantly under the sunlight. After lunch, continue to the beautiful Moltsog Els Sand Dunes, surrounded by mountains and open steppe, where you will visit a local nomadic family and learn about Mongolia’s traditional lifestyle, customs and daily life, followed by a memorable camel ride across the peaceful dunes. Dinner and overnight at a nearby tourist camp. Meals: B, L, DDay 3 - Bayanzag & Moltsog Els
Day 4Yol Valley & Petroglyphs
BreakfastLunchDinner
After breakfast, visit the fascinating Khavtsgait Petroglyphs, ancient rock carvings offering insight into the lives and culture of the prehistoric people who once lived in the region. Continue to Dalanzadgad, the capital of South Gobi Province, and visit the local Gobi Nature and History Museum to learn about the area’s wildlife, geography and dinosaur discoveries. Afterwards, drive to Yol Valley within Gurvan Saikhan National Park, one of Mongolia’s most beautiful natural areas, famous for its towering cliffs, narrow rocky canyons and year-round ice gorge hidden deep inside the canyon. Enjoy a horseback riding excursion followed by a scenic hike through the valley toward the glacier area, before transferring to your tourist camp near the national park. Meals: B, L, DDay 4 - Yol Valley & Petroglyphs
Day 5Baga Gazriin Chuluu
BreakfastLunchDinner
After breakfast, depart for Baga Gazriin Chuluu, a striking granite mountain formation rising from the middle of the open steppe. This unique area is known for its fascinating rock formations, hidden caves, ancient inscriptions and peaceful natural scenery. Explore the rocky landscape on foot, discovering narrow passages, small springs and historical remains connected to old monasteries. As evening approaches, enjoy a spectacular sunset as the granite rocks glow in warm golden and red colours beneath the vast Mongolian sky. Dinner and overnight at a nearby tourist camp. Meals: B, L, DDay 5 - Baga Gazriin Chuluu
Day 6Terelj National Park
BreakfastLunchDinner
After breakfast, begin your journey back toward northern Mongolia and the beautiful Gorkhi-Terelj National Park. On the way, stop at the famous Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex, the largest equestrian statue in the world — explore the museum inside and enjoy panoramic views from the statue’s observation deck. Continue into Terelj National Park, one of Mongolia’s most picturesque destinations, known for its alpine scenery, granite mountains, forests and winding rivers. Visit the iconic Turtle Rock, a naturally shaped rock formation resembling a giant turtle, and hike up to the peaceful Aryabal Meditation Temple overlooking the valley. Overnight at a tourist camp in the national park. Meals: B, L, DDay 6 - Terelj National Park
Day 7Return to Ulaanbaatar

Two very different landscapes, one incredible trip
★★★★★• Apr 2026

What sold us on this tour was combining the Gobi with Terelj at the end. After days of open desert, arriving in the granite mountains and forests near Ulaanbaatar felt like a completely different country. The White Stupa at sunset was a highlight none of us expected.

Terelj was the perfect way to end the trip
★★★★★• May 2026

By day 6 we were tired from the desert but Terelj completely re-energised us. Turtle Rock, the Chinggis Khaan statue, and the horseback ride through the valley were all fantastic. Our guide timed everything so well and the folk concert on our last night in Ulaanbaatar was a lovely send-off.

Baga Gazriin Chuluu was an unexpected favourite
★★★★★• Jun 2026

I had never heard of Baga Gazriin Chuluu before booking and it turned out to be one of the best afternoons of the whole trip — climbing through the granite rocks with almost no one else around, then watching the sunset turn everything gold. Excellent value for an 8-day trip covering this much ground.

Great mix of desert, culture and mountains
★★★★★• Jul 2026

The Flaming Cliffs and Khavtsgait petroglyphs gave real historical depth to the desert days, and then Terelj at the end felt like a proper adventure holiday finale. Camel riding with a local family was genuinely special, not staged at all. Would book with Nomadic Explorer again without hesitation.
